We wanted a vacation that was fun, active, challenging, and memorable and this place in Bat Cave was a great choice for our temporary residence.
Things we loved: the house is super unique and interesting, including the locale. We navigated in and out ok in a 4WD standard size SUV. We loved having a terrace to sit on at night, watching the sun rise and the clouds burn off over the mountains in the morning. We were able to spend 5 full days doing different things every day. We visited Little Switzerland, drove the BRP, hiked Chimney Rock and Crabtree falls, toured the Biltmore, tubed on the French Broad, patronized four breweries, climbed the Chimney Rock Walk, played mini golf, kayaked on Lake Lure, and shopped the stores in charming Chimney Rock. There was something for each of us. We heeded all of Kenny's cautions about bears and had a safe, happy, bear-free trip.
The notes that we would pass onto other prospective renters. First, we wanted to use the fire pit, but didn't because of our fear of bears. Sad, but that's reality. Second, the bunk beds and third bedroom are separate from the rest of the house by a steep and uneven staircase to the basement. It worked out ok, but it's worth knowing in advance if you're traveling with small children who might want to use the bunk beds. Finally, for me, the lighting situation on the main level is sort of an issue. I spend my evenings reading and it was hard because the lighting on the main level was not good. mai
