Welcome to The Seldom Thing (named for an Irish saying, “The Seldom Thing is Wonderful”- which reminds us to value what is rare in life)!

Our spacious single-family home with 5 bedrooms/4 full baths provides stunning unobstructed water views from sun-up to relaxing sunsets over the Sound.

Look for dolphins, birds, shrimp boats, surfers, and beautiful sunrises from the home's three unobstructed ocean view decks, enjoy gorgeous sunsets on the two Sound-side decks, or relax and BBQ on the huge ground level deck. Located on Topsail Island with a quiet, peaceful stretch of the beach with deeded access less than 100 ft away, the home also offers a semi-private pier on the Sound at the end of our block for launching paddle boards, small watercrafts, or kayaks. Complimentary two single kayaks with carry carts, beach chairs and toys, and gear.

The home also provides a convenient elevator at all levels perfect for multi-generational families, or those looking for an easier way to bring in luggage and groceries.

We are located approximately 2.5 miles to either Surf City and Topsail Beach restaurants and activities.

LIVING & KITCHEN AREAS

This 2,300+s.f. home is family friendly, provides a fully stocked kitchen and pantry, and a bright and airy open floor plan in the 3rd Floor Great Room entertaining space with comfortable couches around a 65" smart TV with 10 seat dining table, flanked by a 2-person coffee bar overlooking the ocean and 4-person elevated counter eyeing the kitchen.

The open kitchen features full-size stove and fridge, microwave and toaster oven, blender, coffeemaker, dishwasher, generous cabinets and counter area. The level also features a full covered deck with captain's chairs/tables for unobstructed ocean views, a queen bedroom, full bath, and a sunset deck with captain's chairs.

BEDROOMS & BATHROOMS

The home sleeps up to 14 guests in five bedrooms.

Each bedroom has a full deck with three of the largest bedrooms having generous views of the ocean or the Sound. The home features high-speed internet and each bedroom has a smart TV preloaded with access to Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and other popular channels.

OUTDOOR AREA

Outside the home, enjoy a spacious 36-foot ground level deck featuring an enclosed hot/cold shower, with comfortable deck furniture and lighting that offers a great place to enjoy an evening meal, sunset, or another quiet outdoor space for reading and relaxing. There is also a gas grill and a picnic table and captain's chairs out on the deck.

The home offers ample parking.

*Bedrooms #4 and 5 – Queen Bed in one room and a Full Over Full Bunk Bed in other room with Shared Full Bath, Each with Full Deck with Garden Views. (Same level as Master Bedroom #2).

*We provide very comfortable twin size fold out beds to accommodate two additional persons -- these beds may be placed in any of the bedrooms.

Wonderful long weekend getaway!!
This is our 5th year staying at the North Carolina beaches and this was by far the best place yet. It is dog friendly, all sheets and towels are extremely fresh and clean, beds are comfortable, matching glassware, plates, pots, pans etc for anything you want to cook. Easy access to the beach and the views are right on the beach and the sound. There are enough beach chairs and 2 sturdy kahaks to enjoy in the sound. We are definetely looking at staying at this place again next year!!

Kevin was wonderful to rent from. The beach house was extremely clean and renovated. The beach views were unobstructed. Beach access is right across the road, and close enough for multiple breaks with small children. Would stay here again!

The cottage was perfect for a family gathering! Spacious, well-equipped. We enjoyed the porches as well as the grill area. The views were beautiful of the ocean, and the sound view from top bedroom was spectacular 😊

Fantastic beach house!
Owner was great to work with, communication was easy, and he was very responsive. House had everything we needed for a fantastic stay, including lots of chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, beach toys. Awesome Vacation Rental
The house was amazing with great views and easy beach access. The elevator made loading and unloading a breeze! Rooms were spacious, house was well stocked with everything you need. The road is a bit busy at times but it did not impact our vacation. The host is very responsive and awesome to work with. Would recommend this house without a doubt and we will be returning next year!

We had a wonderful stay at the home with our family. The views of the beach and the sound are as advertised. Amazing stay.
Completely clean, gorgeous, and comfy home. Location was amazing with views of ocean from three levels of balconies. Watched the sun rise most mornings. Just as great is the proximity (short walk) to the sound. Sweet little dock. Watched sunsets most nights from rear balconies. A short drive (3 miles or so) into town for great food without even crossing the bridge. For us the best part of this house was all of the amenities. The owner went above and beyond to make this stay personalized, comfortable, and simple. Communication incredibly easy. Beach days were made simple with chairs, umbrellas, and toys provided. We had a blast exploring the sound with the kayaks and gear provided. We used the outdoor shower daily and my large family enjoyed meals all together both inside and out. Cannot say enough good things about The Seldom Thing and hope to return soon.

Amazing Location
We were on the island for my daughter's wedding, Kevin's place was the perfect place to stay - plenty of room, great beds, clean and comfortable and most of all the location cannot be beat! Although you're across the street from the beach, there are no houses in your view so watching the ocean with your morning coffee couldn't be better.

Nice house, amenities very good (great beach chairs and umbrellas) plenty of deck space. Only negative is that area main road very narrow and busy at times. Also vegetation on north side of house needs to be cut back some at the road, difficult to pull out as you can’t see oncoming traffic.

Family vacation week
My family had a wonderful week in Surf City staying at the Seldom Thing! This included 3 couples, 2 babies and a dog! We saw beautiful sunsets from the back deck and beautiful sunrises from the front deck! The house is very well stocked, the kitchen had everything we needed, the beds were comfortable and even the towels were soft! And we got lucky with perfect weather so we could enjoy the beach and the ocean everyday! Kevin is a very responsive host. Thanks for a great week!

Great Location! Highly recommend!!
Been coming to Topsail for over 30 years with the family. We tried this house for the first time this year after the other one was sold. Everyone liked the house and the location. Beach was not crowded at all. Easy walk to the beach access point. Only thing I will do next time is bring my own pans and knives. Highly recommend!!

From the very beginning, we were very pleased with this property and especially with the host. He was very informative and answered any question we had. He even sent us reminders during the week about the trash pick-up. While on vacation, families can forget this detail. I even sent the host about a particular frying pan in the kitchen and he answered where he had purchased it right away. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was fully stocked. The house was extremely clean and the decks on the front of the house gave us an awesome view of the ocean. We highly recommend this rental property to any interested family.

The Seldom Thing - Could be our family's "Often Thing."
The Seldom Thing, and the owner, were both very welcoming. The owner thought of every little thoughtful touch they could to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. This included a dozen fresh locally made donuts. My family stayed at The Seldom Thing to attend a funeral in the area. This property was a perfect choice. We were able to enjoy the sights and sounds of being oceanfront on Topsail, NC, and the house was large enough for our family to stay in one place. The rooms are larger than they appeared in the VRBO photos. We loved the new living room furniture, so much so that I am researching to see where I can buy the exact same set for my house. The flooring (NO carpet-yeah) is great! Just what the Doctor ordered for our allergies. The kitchen was well-stocked with everything we needed. The owner kept an open line of communication with us and was promptly responded to every question we had. It was tough to drive away but we look forward to going back again soon.

The perfect vacation rental!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! We visit Topsail Island regularly, and this rental is by far the most accommodating of all the ones we’ve stayed in. It was clean, spacious, and the views of the ocean and sound are unmatched, you get the best of both worlds. Great time!
My family and I, party of 8, very much enjoyed our stay at The Seldom Thing. Very spacious, great views, the beds were very comfortable, and we had quick and easy access to the beach! Kevin, the owner, was very responsive and helpful when we had questions. He had a dozen delicious donuts ready for us at the local donut shop the day after our arrival. He was also very accommodating when we had a mixup of our departure day and allowed us to stay another day! I would highly recommend this house for a relaxing getaway!
