Stellar spa facilities; Service was slow when busy, possibly understaffed for holiday weekend; Family room was very spacious and excellent for family of 4 with small children.

I booked this for my husband’s 50th birthday. I received an email stating check in time of 4 pm??? When I called the hotel, they were extremely unhelpful and said that’s the check in time if you book on Expedia as it’s a lot cheaper (£400 is cheap?). And was unbudging. The hotel is nothing special. Very impersonal. No turn down service. No fridge in the room. 3 power cuts in one night. Overall, nothing special and truly astounded by the apathetic service and dismissive attitude. Breakfast below average. Honestly don’t bother. So many more wonderful places to stay.

Dear Andrew, Firstly may I thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit to South Lodge. I am saddened to read that your experience on this occasion did not meet with your expectations. I am sorry to read that you were not happy with the 4pm check in but that is the time that is advertised for the third party whom you booked with. For future reference we do offer a turn down service, it is completed on request of the guest and if you require a room with a fridge then please just let us know and we will action your requirements. A simply exceptional stay

South Lodge exceeded all our expectations. This is truly a 5 Star hotel and the experience is the best we have ever had in a UK property. The staff were uniformly fantastic - helpful and extremely attentive. The room was clean, large and bright with great details and extremely comfortable. The food in Botanica was delicious and the bar food and cocktails were also great, the vibe very relaxed. The highlight of the property is the Spa with its amazing infinity pool, 3 different sauna and steam room options, an outside cold water pond pool for the brave, and a simply wonderful hydro pool where you can relax in hot bubbling water and look up at the stars on a crisp night. We will be back for sure - cannot recommend enough.

Having stayed at the hotel around 10 years, returned to experience the new spa. Promised an upgrade in advance of booking if there was availability but on arrival was told not possible despite the hotel not being very busy. The spa was decent for most part yet but disappointing that there was no whirlpool / jacuzzi indoors. The eating area has a lovely menu though you will need your sunglasses as the lighting is so bright it's quite unrelaxing in there. Treatments were good but were shorter than advertised yet charged at full rate. Our bedroom along with most of the main hotel could do with a revamp. Our bedroom smelt very musty and badly needed redecorating/refurnishing.
