It's sad when a traveler decides to take out their personal frustrations unjustly on a homeowner. When the tenant contacted me about his breakdown prior to arrival, it was very apparent he was upset and frustrated he had the breakdown. I don't live in the area, so I'm not sure what more I could have done other than let them know they were welcome to check in whenever they were able. Being a boat owner ourselves I empathized with his situation and tried to lift his spirits. Regarding the roof, we have been having very severe storms and prior to the tenant’s arrival we discovered there was a leak causing damage inside the house. As the roofers are extremely busy, my roofer had called that night and let me know they would be in that area the next day and asked if they could stop by to assess the damage, because there were more storms coming. Because I care about my tenants and property and make both a priority, I called to let the tenant know there would be a roofer stopping by the next day to make an assessment. I let them know it probably wouldn't be more than 10-15 minutes, but I could reschedule if it was a problem for them because I wanted them to enjoy their day. The tenant wanted to discuss with his wife, then called me back and said they had decided to leave in the morning. When I advised there wouldn’t be a refund for his decision to leave early, because a person on the roof for a few minutes would have had no effect on his stay at my property, the tenant became belligerent and sent evil messages. This is unacceptable behavior. As for the fees charged, a cleaning fee is standard, and the service fee is a VRBO fee of which I have no control. The insurance policy has been a savior for the tenants that have had to use it in the past. Regarding the trash, I agree it is an inconvenience, but my housekeepers drive small vehicles and are not equipped to haul trash. The trash removal for the entire neighborhood are the community dumpsters that residents and renters alike must use. Everyone is held to the same standard. Unfortunately, this review is simply the result of a traveler who was having a bad trip because of a breakdown lashing out at the homeowner and an unfair assessment. In addition, after going back through correspondence, this traveler was having issues making payment from the start and reached out to me. He said the ‘pay now’ option wasn’t working, and that he had contacted VRBO, but they couldn’t help. When I contacted VRBO support on his behalf, they said they had talked to him and offered to take payment directly over the phone, but he had hung up on them. After multiple messages back and forth that day he said he was going to pursue another property, because this was too exhausting. The next day he made an instant booking on my property. Hindsight tells me he was trying to circumvent the system from the start. Owners BEWARE!
