Built in the 1850's as a hotel and Keweenaw County's first jail, the 'Big House' (and it is truly big at 3700 sq ft), has been carefully renovated into a single family residence that sleeps 10. First floor consists of a large sun porch with lake views, two ample living rooms filled with oversize sofas and chairs for lounging. An enormous gourmet kitchen comes complete with Viking stove, granite countertops, quality cooking equipments, spices, and a table with seating for ten. The large center island magnetically draws laughter and conversation around food preparation. The substantial mudroom completes the first floor with cubbies, hooks and plenty of space to put adventure gear away after a day outdoors. The second floor houses three bedroom suites -- one with two conjoining rooms with king and queen beds plus bath w/shower, one with a queen and single with bath w/shower, and one with a full and bath w/shower. The third floor suite has a queen and bath w/shower and the first jail in Keweenaw County! Hardy heart pine doors with hand wrought iron decorates the holding cell once used for boisterous miners and seafarers back in the copper boom. The Big House is steps away from miles of sandy Lake Superior beach, top notch dining at the Fitz, Eagle River Falls, Eagle River Museum, and the Keweenaw County Courthouse.
