Significant miscommunications from host made for difficult stay

The house was spacious and set up for a large group when we arrived. The listing indicated that it slept 8 people, and that seemed appropriate based on the setup. When booking, the form seems to have defaulted to saying there would be four guests which was ultimately incorrect as we had seven for a one-night stay. Michele (the host) lives in the house on the other side of the driveway (in my opinion this should have been made more clear in the listing) and was keeping an eye on who was arriving and as soon as we had more than four people, Michele was sending us messages asking for additional payment given that we had gone over the "maximum" of four guests. We did not want any trouble so we just paid it without an argument. However, we kept getting messages from Michele asking how many of us there would be (which we were completely transparent about). Michele then sent messages indicating that they thought we intended to smoke inside the house (I don't smoke, never have, and doing it inside someone else's home would be disgusting). This made us generally feel unwelcome and if our stay included more than one night we likely would have found somewhere else. Other check-in/out instructions were confusing (uncertainty about what to do with linens/towels, whether or not we can/should use the dishwasher, etc.). What was supposed to be a simple, easy overnight stay (arriving after dinnertime, leaving before 8am the next day) quickly became a headache and added stress to the trip

Interesting take. What really happened was Michael booked for 4 people and paid for 4 people but cars kept coming up and there were 8 which was over the guest limit. Since the contract was broken I could have asked you to leave but was gracious enough to allow you and all the extra guests stay. If you read the listing if clearly states 4 adults and that I live on the property. People book in haste and they don’t thoroughly read the listing. The pictures alone depict the distance from my home to the guest house. Just because you don’t smoke doesn’t mean the others won’t and since we had someone with allergies arriving I wanted to remind you to remind your extra guests that there was no smoking. You violated the rules and didn’t read the listing. To add insult to injury you are lying that you were “confused “ on what to do with the towels. I sent you 2 emails before check in and during what the checkout instructions are. We don’t ask our guests to clean. We asked you to leave any used towels by the washer and that there was no need to make beds or remove linens. So disappointing that you would lie and say otherwise because you didn’t follow the rules.

Beautiful views and spacious rooms!

This is a large property. We were able to relax and enjoy ourselves. The beds were amazing and everything was fresh and clean. Although the owner is on sight, we had complete privacy. The kitchen is well appointed with everything you need to make a wonderful Vermont meal. 10 out of 10. We’d stay again!

The house was excellent and the view of the pond was amazing! But what we appreciated the most was Michele's help and communication about the snowstorm that was set to hit the area. She had excellent info and advice and was able to move our stay up a day so we could stay ahead of the storm. We had a great trip to Vermont and very much appreciate her help!

Pleasant stay but disappointing and needs improvement

Michele was pleasant. Check in was easy. House was large and was set up for families. Spacious and attractive. There really was no view as I anticipated. A few repairs need doing. Tub and sink in downstairs bathroom not functioning. The beautiful deck was disappointing. It was dirty and the flower pots were not filled with fall flowers. They were filled with dried weeds. Deck in my opinion would have been more welcoming with some fall flowers and decorations. Easy to do. We got the bums rush checking out.We were 10 min late (10:15) because I have a hard time with physical stuff. I have a serious back issue and will be getting spine surgery early Nov. It took a little longer to pack the car. I felt bad when I received a message from Michele saying the cleaner had arrived and she was paying her from 10 o’clock. So we need to go right away. As we were packing the car, no one came to clean. We would have seen them. So overall; I wouldn’t recommend this place. No tv, very sketchy internet Had a mixup with the payment. It was a nightmare. Finally got that taken care of with Many communications with Michele. She offered me a free night and then retracted that when my partner ( who drove 250 miles and arrived before me ) arrived and was told there was no free night, but he could stay if we paid, We opted to find another place. The house doesn’t seem to be maintained as it should. I won’t detail because I won’t be going back. I

Sigh. I don’t even know how to address this. I have text messages that prove otherwise. This is a retaliatory review since Brenda lost a case against us through Vrbo. The listing clearly states there is no TV. There are pictures on the listing that shows the view. The deck did not have flowers because it snowed and the flowers wilted. We don’t place flowers in the cold weather cause they don’t survive in the snow. Brenda asked to stay an extra day while she was with us but we were booked and couldn’t accommodate her. Her text messages clearly indicated she was enjoying the home. Upon checkout Brenda and her guest decided they didn’t have to leave at the checkout time. The cleaner was absolutely there at my home waiting. When I asked her to please checkout she said she was trying. No regard to the rules or that we were paying for the time the cleaners were waiting. Brenda then proceeded to say the coffee pot didn’t work. It did. Brenda decided that because the coffee pot wasn’t working that she didn’t have to pay for her weekend so she of her friend processed a charge back to their credit card. They didn’t pay. Vrbo reviewed the messages that were sent to us and they clearly saw that Brenda was enjoying her stay so they lost the case and I was finally paid. Brenda was very upset and she told me about her upcoming surgery so I told her she could come back one night for free. I don’t have bad reviews and want all my guests to leave with a good experience. It was a gesture because there were many unpleasant messages being sent back and forth. I decided to try and end it on a positive note. Big mistake!! Out of the blue, a strange man I’ve never seen before shows up on my property that’s posted with no trespassing signs and with a car already parked in front of the guest house decides to just walk right in. We could have had guests there at the moment. I’m so thankful we were in the middle of cleaning. I was completely blindsided by this man walking into our guest house on our private property. He didn’t introduce himself. It was pretty alarming. Brenda just assumed that without a phone call or an email or reservation that her partner would just show up and we would accommodate them. Writing a bad review because the porch didn’t have fall flowers in the freezing weather will give people an indication. If any hosts are reading this please proceed with caution. As for Brenda, I wish her well but she is not welcome here.

Perfect for us

Came to Putney to work remotely and get together with my son, who was working 25 minutes away. The cabin was just what we needed. Not fancy, but everything we needed to live more than comfortably for the month. Michelle and her family made us feel like family, doggie included!! They were respectful of our privacy but very friendly. They live right next door so if you are looking for aloneness this place isn’t for you, but for us it was just perfect. Michelle’s daughter is a chef and brought us homemade cookies, bread, and butter! One night when there was a storm and the town’s power went out, Michelle’s husband brought us lanterns. The town of Putney is lovely, and Brattleboro is just a quick drive. Lovely farmers’ markets and some very good restaurants! Great hikes nearby including Monadnock and Cardigan all within less than two hours’ drive. Thank you Michelle and fam!

Perfect winter getaway

My husband and I loved staying here. The location was excellent for our needs, remote yet close to so much. The view was stunning! Loved the open living space and gas fireplace. So cozy and welcoming. Thank you for an amazing stay.
