Room was spacious and classically furnished. Some of the furniture, drapery, and lobby finishes were a bit worn, but to be expected in an older, historic hotel. The staff was friendly and accommodating and spoke English which made check-in and out easier. I would stay at this hotel again.

Good location, but a bit tired...
The location of the Astor House is amazing! And, my room was clean. However, the mattress was really hard. And, the thermostat wouldn't control the temperature. While the Astor House has an historic charm it is a bit rundown in the lobby area. All that said, the price was right and I had good service, overall.
Felt a bit like sleeping in a museum, which was kinda cool. Great location near the Bund. You get a big breakfast, not included, in the elaborate Peacock Hall. Staying at this hotel enriched our stay in Shanghai.
The location can't be beat. It is just minutes from The Bund, but just far enough away that you aren't overwhelmed by the crowds.
The room we stayed in was huge and had a view of The Pearl from our window.
Especially if you want to be near the Bund
A little far from metro station
Breakfast very good - staff very nice -
Room large but needs some attention as it was showing it's wear & tear.
Reception area needs an upgrade & more guest lounge seating to relax in while waiting. It is oldly worldly with lots of character. Would stay there again
No hassles, good food, very clean and quaint. Historic old hotel nicely modernized. A short walk to Bund where you can go on river cruises or bus tours
loved the room; hotel has lots of history, unique features; great museum about the hotel and the evolution of the bund region right in the hotel; fun to stay here! staff will turn down your bed in afternoon, give you next day's weather report. lots of neat hallways to explore--the hotel has some hidden corners, unique features, not like the new types of hotels where every floor is exactly the same!
We enjoyed our stay. Though we requested the rooms to be side by side; while the room numbers are indeed in sequence but one was located in farthest corner, though not a big deal, must have been language barrier. Over-all,our stay was pleasant.
Old world charm. 19th century architecture wonderful.

Disliked: Staff & service
Lovely but old hotel
The lift well was undergoing refurbishment so we had to walk 2 floors of steps. The Wi fi in our room was abysmal which is not very handy when in a foreign country. The daily service was welcomed although the rooms are in bad need of refurbishment themselves. We were awoken one morning by children playing loudly in the adjoining room which sounded like they were in our very room. The acoustics are not good for sleeping in even tho there are black out curtains. The smell of cigarettes seemed to waft in to our room as well.

Hotel is a little tired but position on bund amazing ,very good value for position.
The Astor was the first building in China to have electric light and a telephone. I love history and really enjoyed my stay. The hotel has a rather charming shabbiness, in a good way. If you like gleaming and modern this hotel is not for you. But if you love historical buildings I highly recommend. An astoundingly good breakfast buffet is worth every penny. In a very good location right near the river in the Buns. Staff has limited English, but try very hard. I was always able to manage to communicate. A 5 minute walk to the Riverside Promenade, The monument of hero's and other historically important buildings. The only criticism I have is check out can take a while....in my case about 20 minutes. I thought it was a wonderful place to stay.
Staying at this hotel is like staying in a museum! If you enjoy historic buildings and the history of Shanghai then this is the perfect place. As you first walk through the hotel you'll notice the extra high ceiling and the cracking sound of the dated but polished wooden floorboards, which immediately differentiates it from most modern hotels. Although the buildings are old, the rooms are clean and maintained well and decorated with appropriate vintage furniture. It's worth reading about the significant events related to this hotel, which would make the experience extra special as you explore the hotel grounds. We stayed at a celebrity room (Bertrand Russell) and it was worth every extra cent. Breakfast was at the ball room and had a great varity of western and Chinese food. Most guests are independent travellers (about 50% foreigners) so the place is a great escape from the usual tour group crowds found in other hotels near the Bund.
If you are looking for somewhere to stay that is a bit different than all the usual international hotel chains then this is an option. The Astor House has been well preserved and the room we stayed in was furnished as it may have been in the 1920s. The amenities are basic but decent and the food on offer for breakfast catered to taste of the majority of guests who were Chinese. The staff were friendly and spoke English well. The location is good for those who want to enjoy the Bund waterfront area.
An uneventfull stay in a historic property however i found the frontdesk staff very rude andnot very helpfull. The lightning in the room washorrible kind of neon bulb.electric plugs were substandard and not enough to connect laptop and phone at the same tim

Historic and rather special.
Pleasant reception with adequate English spoken. Help with cases and entry etc. and calling taxis. Good little bar in the foyer with a simple menu, and a wide reaching buffet breakfast with a chef to make your eggs as you like them, if you don't want Chinese food.
Breakfast in the beautiful historic ballroom.
Easy walk across the bridge(watch out for selfie sticks and wedding couples having their photos taken) to the Bund and the main shopping street.
