We're delighted you came & experienced the unique atmosphere The Mill offers. Antiques are part of the decor, as well as old equipment, pulleys hanging from the ceiling, flour auger, bag stencils, etc.

Peaceful Place

The owners are the nicest people to work with, they treat you like family. They supply almost everything you need...just bring your suitcase because that is all you really need.
This historic mill is quiet, except for the falls outside that put you to sleep or create a peaceful calm, it's always clean, and it's right downtown in Shell Rock. Look no further than this serene setting for a place to stay whenever you are staying anywhere close to Shell Rock Iowa!

Great Location
Posted Nov. 28, 2023 on HomeAwayFamily vacation for Wartburg's first 2 playoff games and to celebrate Thanksgiving. Easy drive to Waverly and Waterloo. Cozy, with enough room for 6 of us to have our own space. Diana is friendly and helped up out by readying the 3rd floor for our additional guests after we checked in. Very relaxing on the river.

Wonderful Fall get-a-way

We're grateful for your patience when an unexpected issue beyond our control arose. Do return with your family. The first floor sleeps six if beds are shared (Property ID 1056730) with a two-bedroom arrangement. The second floor studio unit, open floor plan, is where you stayed with the awesome view from the deck/balcony (Property ID 1136016). It also sleeps six. The 3rd floor may be rented with the second floor for an additional nightly fee. Six to eight guests may be accommodated there with a full bathroom and a sitting area.
You and your family are welcome guests. You certainly earned a bonus for your next stay.

Great fall getaway
Posted Oct. 26, 2023 on HomeAwayWe stayed in the lower unit with my kids and parents. Upper and lower units could be combined for a bigger group, which we may try next time. Location is amazing for fishing! We originally had planned to go explore some other parts of the river but had all the action we could have wanted right below the rapids by the mill. Lots of walleye, smallmouth bass, and a couple northern pike. Had a fish fry in the fire pit one night and still had plenty of fish to bring home with us. We also brought bikes and did a lot of riding around town. The streets in Shell Rock are quiet and safe. We didn’t go to any restaurants, but the gas station in town does have a lot of food options. The house had all of the kitchen and grilling utensils we needed. Only complaint is that the older TV only has antenna channels (we didn’t watch a lot of TV, but a streaming option would be nice). Overall a very fun and relaxing trip. We will be back!

Christie & family. You hit the jackpot! What excitement for the boys with successful fishing from the bank of the Shell Rock River! Why waste time driving somewhere when fish are biting right outside The Old Mill, right? People fish year around.
We encourage guest interaction with nature and each other by providing board games, cards, croquet, balls, frisbees, tennis racquets. No cable in the mill helps keep our rates lower. A dvd/vhs player is available. The mill's second floor unit (Property ID 1136016) has a Roku TV. Both units have WiFi access. Thanks for your feedback.
Yes, do return. Hosting three generations so they may relax, have fun and make memories in the mill's rustic, comfy, cozy "grandparent's home atmosphere" is a highlight for us. We'll hang the celebration banners if you share what special occasion it is.
NOTE: Both first & second floors have two beds and a futon. A third floor, dorm-style "sleeping level" with a sitting area and a full bathroom, may be rented with the second floor. If beds are shared and people like each other, the mill accommodates 6 adults per floor, plus a couple of smaller children, for a total of 18 to 24 (18 maximum adults).

Family wedding
Posted Oct. 1, 2023 on HomeAwayWe were in town for a family wedding so we booked this rental. Very clean and so many nice touches! My grandchildren loved the snacks you provided. Loved sitting on the deck in the evening watching the river. The owners were very responsive!

Renting the 3rd floor sleeping level in addition to the 2nd floor studio unit, allows plenty of space for young & old. If you like each other, the two floors easily sleep 12 guests. Thanks for lodging at The Old Mill!

History buff

The Old Mill is packed with history, for sure. We try to have items of interest available for our guests. Our goal when we created living space within the mill was to highlight, leave intact or visible, as much of the timbers, wood and equipment as possible. In addition, furniture was chosen as a reminder of days gone by. Guests will see examples of 1867 mortise and tenon construction. Sturdy columns and saddles perched atop them reveal craftsmanship used for utilitarian purposes. We're delighted to provide props to make your stay interesting, as well as educational.
