Peaceful Mexican Village Getaway
Publié le 9 janv. 2024 sur HomeAwayShelley's place was everything we hoped for. It was off the beaten path, away from tourist traffic and activities, but close enough to access the beaches and unique villages in the area. We were on the go a lot, but we could have easily spent much of the week comfortably relaxing there, enjoying the quiet front and back patios and the park and cenote across the street. This is a Mexican casita that feels authentic to the area, and there are a lot of nice touches. We loved the local artwork and vibrant colors. The kitchen is newly remodeled and well-stocked, and it's easy to prepare simple meals. It was very clean, and the king bed was comfy! We made use of the two provided beach chairs and beach towels for our trips to local beaches. There's plenty of privacy on the back patio, and we loved the option to take advantage of the outdoor shower after beach trips. Shelley's communication was great, and she offered a ton of information to help us feel at home and learn about the area. When there was an unexpected problem with the A/C, she was on it right away and worked with her on-site manager to quickly fix it. We felt very safe in the quiet little neighborhood and enjoyed exploring the village of Chemuyil. It's a bit of a drive to Tulum, so look carefully at the map if you want to be close to Tulum activities. If you want a peaceful and authentic experience away from the tourists, you will likely fall in love with this special little casita!

Disappointed…
Publié le 12 mars 2023 sur HomeAwayUnlike previous guests we were very disappointed with this rental. It looks pretty from the outside, but the roar of nearby highway traffic day and night was disturbing and depressing (for us). You can’t get to any beach without navigating the busy highway. The living and dining area are very colourful and comfortable and so is the bed. The kitchen is in bad shape. The sink is old and crusty. No real cupboards or drawers. Plastic shelves with mostly plastic plates and glasses hidden behind Velcro curtains. The back patio is neglected and sad.

This is rich coming from people who treated the casita like their personal pigsty. Rotting fruit on the table, maggots in the trash, which appeared to never be taken out by the way, and filthy dishes everywhere. Plus you were extremely rude to my kind neighbors.
Unless you’re going to stay at a resort at quadruple the price, you’re going to have to drive to a beach, including 2 minutes to the one across the road. You should have done more research about the area. My review of your stay reflects your complete lack of respect. Good riddance.
Circling back about the kitchen. There are no plastic shelves or plastic dishes or glasses. I have metal rolling carts for all kitchen items, making them more accessible than shelves under the counter. Green pans for cookware. Corelle for the dishes and acrylic drinkware. Why? Because I learned early on that people break dishes and glassware constantly. For safety, I moved to high quality unbreakable dishware. Utensils are metal. And there is extremely hard water in the area, I replace the kitchen and bathroom faucet hardware regularly because of the build up. The backyard looks exactly like the photos, and I can't control traffic sounds.

Great location, bad water pressure
Publié le 19 janv. 2023 sur HomeAwayWe enjoyed our stay in Chemuyil. It's a delightful town and a nice neighborhood. The casa is comfortable except that the water pressure is very low, so that taking a shower is difficult.

Kitty, did you ever talk to the property manager about this? I’m sure it could have been resolved it quickly if you told them. I’m sorry this happened.

Real Mexico!
Publié le 10 déc. 2022 sur HomeAwayIf you want to get a nice, relaxing vacation, this is the place to stay! Sweet little casa right off the highway. Easy access to beach and the local cenotes are pretty much in your front yard. Plenty of towels and supplies in the house for use as well. The Ciudad Chemuyil is the real deal. Children singing for pesos with Our Lady of Guadalupe day coming soon. Restaurants in the tiny town had amazing seafood and service. Would definitely stay at this colorful and cute property again!!

Chan Chemuyl
Publié le 4 déc. 2022 sur HomeAwayWe enjoyed our stay in Chan Chemuyl.
The neighborhood is clean and nice. Very charming. We absolutely loved the small cenotes right there within the community. The house is also cute and comfortable. Shelley was accessible via email wherever we had a question and was very helpful.
As long as you have a car, this is a great option for anyone who prefers to stay outside of the main tourist area of Tulum and still have easy access to town and the beaches. Tulum beach was about a 20-30 drive (depending on traffic) and town was more like 15 minutes. The Turtle Sanctuary across the street is beautiful but I would still recommend driving as you must cross the busy highway and it is a little nerve-racking on foot ;) Akumal and it's beaches are also only a 10 minute drive from the casa.
Overall we had a great time and would certainly recommend staying here.
Thanks Shelley!!

Cute neighbour hood and house
Publié le 14 nov. 2022 sur HomeAwayTravelling with my partner and our two young children. The good: The house & neighbour hood is charming. Patrictio who came to introduce himself was super kind and welcoming and let us know if we needed anything to not hesitate to contact. There were tons of clean towels to use. Air conditioning in like 3 rooms for such a small place meant if it’s hot, you sure won’t be inside! The master bed was literally one of the comfiest I’ve been in in a long time.
The medium: First, the pin on the VRBO map shows the property on the other side of the highway, the beach side. This is very misleading. It is in fact on the other side meaning you need to run across the busy highway to start your walk to the beach. With two kids under 4, this wasn’t ideal. It’s also much longer than a 10 min walk which would be fine except when it’s so hot and humid with kids. The beach hours are super limited (10-4:30).
There is a plunger that lives over the drain in the shower which I think is used to keep cockroaches out? I could be wrong but once I moved it off the drain and left it off for a bit we had a visitor so I promptly put it back on. Ants were a little bit of an issue but also we weren’t bothered, bugs are a part of travel a lot of the time.
The backyard was cuter in photos. The hammock was very broken we couldn’t lay in it which was probably one of the bigger bummers.
All in all, it’s a fine stay at a good price and it is a cute house. We wouldn’t stay again but that’s mostly just due to the location and challenges of travelling with kids. We didn’t reach out for help during the stay as nothing was a big deal to us, but I almost considered mentioning the hammock because having that space to lay would have been lovely.
If you stay here, you absolutely need a rental car. There’s also a free cenote in Chemuyil if you ask any locals they can point you to it which is cool. Area felt safe.

Hi Karly, I wish you would have told me about the hammock, I had no idea! I will have the property managers get a new one ASAP. The pin on the map is done by VRBO, I don’t have the ability to move it. I also can’t help that the beach hours at Xcacel are limited to 6 hours a day. It’s run by a Mayan family to preserve the integrity and cleanliness of what is first and foremost turtle nesting grounds.
I wish you had reached out, this is the first 3 star review I’ve ever received in the 10 years I’ve been renting out the house.
