The Good: The hot spring baths on the 5th floor (inside and outside) are really worth the challenge in getting to the hotel. There is good hiking around the town although the info available from the tourist office is quite limited for those speaking English.
The Not So Good: The room I had, although quite spacious, was not very practical. A single thin futon bed was in the middle of a otherwise largely empty space. There is a very low traditional Japanese table with pillows to sit on, but no desk. The bathroom I had was clean, but well... in need of updating. The room is not well insulated and definitely gets cold quickly in early December, without the heating on full blast. There was separate sitting area as a part of the suite, with faded and time discolored couches and chairs. With some investment, this place could be great.

Must visit for the Open air Onsen.
Posted Feb. 5, 2022 on HotelsHotel is good but rooms are too old. Especially bath and toilet attached to the room are from early Showa times. Stafff at reception are either extremely nice or too indifferent. Seems to be a management problem. Best thing is the Onsen. Just for the open air Onsen I would ignore the rest and visit again.

Not sure what to think
Posted Mar. 11, 2019 on HotelsWe booked 3 standard rooms. Two had no shower. Not a tub and no shower, there was nothing to clean yourself in. when we pointed that out, they changed us to a very nice suite with tub and showers and we were very happy. Until the next day when they demanded that we move again to a different room. They had the audacity to say that the first night was a courtesy and now we are getting the rooms we actually booked, which is not correct. All this discussion was held via google translate so it took about 2 hours to sort this out,. Giant waste of time.
Also, while Unzen is only 25 miles from Nagasaki, it does take over an hour to get there
The hot bath are typical Japanese meaning separated by gender and nude is required
