Strathcona is where we are located, and is the oldest residential neighbourhood of Vancouver. Officially a part of the East Side, and is bordered by Chinatown, the Downtown Eastside, and is a 5 minute drive to Gastown and downtown Vancouver. There is a homeless population in the area, and our back lane is shared with the Union Gospel Soup Kitchen.
This is an inner city neighborhood. We highly recommend having a rental car or taking Ubers from our location. I don’t recommend taking public transit from our neighborhood if your have young children due to the homeless population nearby.
We share an alley with the local soup kitchen - a charity to feed homeless people. Often the homeless people in Vancouver have drug issues. These types of people nearby is not nice to see, but the home itself is safe. We have had guests stay with young children and they feel safe inside, and drive everywhere from the place.
BUT if you’re uncomfortable with homeless people, or seeing street drug use, please don’t book with us. If you’re ok with homeless people nearby, as long as you feel safe in the place you’re staying, you’re good to stay at our home. We recommend driving or using Uber.
Award winning restaurants are located within minutes from the townhouse:
- St. Lawrence and Barbara restaurants have received their Michelin Stars in 2022.
- The Mackenzie Room and Ask for Luigi nearby has earned nods from Michelin
- Belgard Kitchen and Railtown Café are great for more casual meals
- Great bars, restaurants and café's are all located nearby
Although Strathcona was historically a working-class neighbourhood, recently, more middle-class and affluent groups have come to inhabit the neighbourhood, attracted by its vibrant community. Strathcona is home to many art galleries, family-owned corner stores, and other small businesses.
We have 1 secured parking spot in the detached garage only steps from the back door. There is sometimes free street parking but the area is very close to downtown so it's hard to find spots like this. We are located 1 block from 2 busy roads with many buses that can take you to nearby Skytrain Stations.
Please read description, the neighbourhood description & look at all photos. Soup kitchen nearby attracts homeless population. Guests with children still feel safe staying at our place in spite of this, we recommend driving or taking Uber if with young children.
There are specific photos in our listing, please look through all of them. This is so our guests get a good idea about our home and the neighbourhood better before arrival.
Our neighbourhood is filled with a wide variety of eclectic people. There are many families with children, working class people, Michelin Star restaurants, but this is an inner city neighbourhood with a soup kitchen directly behind our home. This means you will see homeless people.
We have neighbours in the house next door on the other side of the fence, and they sometimes smoke outside on their balconies. If you keep the windows closed on that side of the house, you'll be able to keep the smoke smell out.
Additionally, the soup kitchen at the other end of the lane is called the Union Gospel Mission. It's a charitable organization providing meals, education, shelter, safe and affordable housing, drug and alcohol recovery programs, and support services to those struggling with homelessness.
If you're not ok with homeless people in the neighbourhood, please book somewhere else that would be more suitable to your needs.
