Perfect for stargazing!
Posted Mar. 19, 2024 on HomeAwayWe enjoyed our stay at Hummingbird Ranch. The place was super clean, comfortable, and very well decorated. Renee and Steve were easy to communicate with. The property is perfect for stargazers and/or astrophotographers. Think of it as your own private oasis in the desert, surrounded by mountains off in the distance. We were delighted with the clear skies and the resulting photos. There are numerous hiking trails and historical sights as close as a half hour drive. We can’t wait to return.

Jan & Kris were 5-Star guests. Steve and I enjoyed working with them to plan their stargazing adventure. They left our home in perfect condition. We thought that our cleaning girl had already been at the house. We could only wish to have more excellent guests like Jan & Kris :). Please hurry back again soon. Thank you for staying at Hummingbird Ranch.

Perfect for getting to know Cochise County & Chiricahua's
Posted Feb. 29, 2024 on HomeAwayWe're avid hikers and the location of Hummingbird Ranch was ideal for driving to the Chiricahua National Monument, the Coronado National Forest and the Cochise Stronghold. We love the Sandcrane Reserve and Willcox, as well. Renee and Steve are generous hosts and their house and garden are great for relaxing after a day on the trail. Birds are abundant, as are their stock of books on the area and DVDs for evening viewing.

Exploration headquarters
Posted Oct. 19, 2023 on HomeAwayThis roomy, clean, super quiet property was everything we were looking for as a base for our exploration of southeast Arizona. We did day trips to Chiricahua National Monument, Kartchner Caverns, Whitewater Draw (to see thousands of sandhill cranes) and more. Great location, super quiet and incredible night skies.

Quiet location with lots of birds
Posted Feb. 3, 2023 on HomeAwayThe directions to the house were spot on. Renee was welcoming and let us know the house was available early for us. While the house was comfortable, it was difficult to relax due to all the house dos and don'ts. (We didn't bother to use the TV or DVD player given the convoluted instructions.) The internet was more reliable than we'd expected. All the other VRBOs we've rented (in US and France) have been much less heavy handed with their house rules and treated us as grown-ups. Maybe the owners have had problems with renters in the past. The birds were wonderful to watch and the cacti amazing. The sky at night wasn't as dark as we'd expected though lots of stars were visible..

Thank you Phoebe & Richard for staying at our Hummingbird Ranch Birding Retreat :). We so much enjoyed working with you to plan your vacation. You are so right about the rules, some people are just totally clueless and we have to guide them through every step of how to do things at the Ranch. We are so sorry that you found them overbearing. That is not our intention. We are just trying to be helpful and trying to give our guests the best possible vacation ever!!! Please hurry back again soon, the Ranch misses you both.
Thank you Renee & Stephen

If you love remote this is for you
Posted Jan. 26, 2023 on HomeAwayIf you want an hour from civilization this is for you. For two gals over 70, looking for a small dirt road in the middle of nowhere in the dark was not what we expected, luckily, we had a good GPS system. The home is very clean and surprisingly well furnished...where we were we thought we'd be just grateful for indoor plumbing. The home was a pleasant surprise once we got past the gate and the key entry system. Lots of written directions throughout the home and a heater that was willing to work overtime. The view was less than expected…billed as: "Cochise's Hummingbird Ranch SPECTACULAR 360 MTN & Natl Parks" maybe we just didn't know where to look but we did not find much of a view. Wonderful birding couple made my stay worthwhile; gal pal was too far from civilization to be comfortable. Biggest disappointment..... no hummingbird feeders to fill after I brought nectar as directed in written communications.

Wow. It is rare for us to have to respond to a less than 5-star review since we get so few of them. We're sorry our place did not meet the expectations of these guests. We are located in rural southeast Arizona so it is isolated but the small towns of Sunsites & Elfrida are only 10 or 15 minutes away. Dirt roads are a way of life in our area - anything other than a main highway is generally unpaved - we feel it adds to the rural charm of Cochise County. We advise all guests to arrive in the daytime since the night skies are very dark & there are light restrictions so everything does not get lit up like a WalMart parking lot. Yes the house does have indoor plumbing (hot & cold running), a central heat & air conditioning system, electricity & internet besides! Yes, the gas furnace does run when it gets cold - we actually do get winter there in the high desert. We do keep the gate & house locked for security & provide the easiest gate lock & house key lockbox we could find to make it as convenient as possible for our guests to enter - we do not live at the Ranch so we can't just hand people the key or open up for them. It is harder in the dark but everybody has a flashlight on their cellphones these days. We do not put any hummingbird feeders out in the winter because they will freeze & break. As far as the views, 99% of our guests are amazed & thrilled by the mountain vistas with the Chiricahuas (location of the Chiricahua National Monument) to the east & the Dragoons (location of the Cochise Stronghold) to the west - some foothills with interesting rock outcroppings are closer to the north & south so yes, there are 360 degree views - the beauty is in the eye of the beholder! We are glad they enjoyed the birding guides Alan & Pam that we recommended - everyone who goes out with them has a great experience.
Thanks for staying with us anyway,
Renee & Steve K

Great location for wildlife
Posted Oct. 17, 2022 on HomeAwayThe ranch has a 360 view of the mountains, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The house is warm and friendly and has everything you need. We watched lots of birds in the garden , including species we’d never seen before. Renee was very helpful.
