Be wary - two adjacent cottages
Publié le 22 oct. 2024 sur HomeAwayThe big problem is the single building is two cottages, separated by a paper-thin wall. This is not clear in the property description. It is also the opposite of Bookabach’s claim that “you get the whole private home”. The upstairs bedroom (& living room) in the cottage is immediately adjacent to the neighbouring cottage. On our first night, we were woken up by the neighbours arriving at 10 pm, hearing them walk up and down their stairs, talking, etc. It was like being in a hostel (not a “private home”). I called the owner, who said that if we wanted to leave, she would refund our stay (we were never fully refunded). We then spent until around 1 am trying to contact Bookabach to cancel the booking, and then booking a new place for the next night (not easy as this was during school holidays). We were then woken up again at 7 am by the neighbours leaving. The wooden structure is very noisy, lots of creaking and general sounds as people move about - inappropriate for conjoining two cottages.
It was to difficult contact VRBO when realising the accommodation was sub-standard and misleadingly advertised. Try it – there is no general contact number or even email.
My advice is the obvious – only book once you have read ALL the reviews, and if a property has few reviews, don’t go there.
Overall, the property would be fine if there no neighbours. But under no circumstances would I recommend staying here if you were unsure whether somebody else was in the next door unit.

The fire is fabulous, everything else a wonderful experience and super comfortable larger beds

Nice and peaceful setting. Loved seeing all the chooks and meeting the two dogs this morning.

Fantastic farm stay
Publié le 7 avr. 2023 sur HomeAwayWhat a fantastic place to stay. Beautiful grounds which we could wander around with our dog. The cottage was well appointed and very comfortable. Close to multiple recreational opportunities if you like the outdoors. Excellent communication with the host. I would definitely like to go back.

we have endlesss parking here, including for buses....it is unfortunate that the night you stayed there was a large dinner function in the private lodge, this is a situation that happens once or twice a year- although you still had plenty of parking space for your building( for3 cars!) just behind your building . It couldn't have been closer for you.
We do not do heat pumps here, they are inappropriate for the buildings and we cannot have the outside part due to heritage regulations. Guests really enjoy the logburners , which are super efficient, in particular the one in the house where you stayed; we find that guests light it even when it is not necessary because it is a novelty these days for people who live in such
urban situations. We even have comments that the fire is too efficient, that they are too hot, believe it or not. If you were cold that nightwe would have been more than happy to come and have it going for you if you had asked, the fire was already set.
We are glad however, that you enjoyed your stay.

Simple but good space for family hols
Publié le 18 juill. 2021 sur HomeAwayA nice enough spot, but lacking a few finer details that you expect of a 'lodge type stay' eg: 4pm check in was required (a chilly 3 deg out) No heating on and the fire took a while to crank up, getting mega hot upstairs yet still cold down with timber floors... (no kindling, firelighters, paper, even coffee on arrival), only one side of elec blanket one bed, none on single beds. Loud noises from attached unit (thin walls) kids running up and down wooden stairs and their gas califont clicking and cluncking right outside the downstairs main bedroom much of the night and early morning was a bit annoying! Im sure the owners mean well but seem busy/preoccupied with so many rooms to manage

It is evident that you had incorrect expectations and misconceptions of what you booked. You booked a bookabach. We wonder where you got the notion of 'coffee on arrival'? You booked a bach in the middle of winter in the mountains. Normally when one books a bach they get told where the key is at booking time and get left to their own devices to check themselves in, they never even meet the owner. Instead, here we go the extra mile because we welcome you personally, the kitchen has tea/coffee/sugar/oil/herbs/spices, and milk in the fridge for you. As a courtesy, lights are on it if it is dark and in the winter we set the fire for you. If you advise an approximate arrival time, we even light it in anticipation of your arrival.
Gunyah Country Estate has 2 ‘products’: the luxury lodge and 3 bookabach houses, entirely different things. It seems that you thought you were staying in our luxury lodge, a totally different type of accommodation, service - and price.
The single beds in the small bedroom don't have electric blankets due to safety requirements: 99% of the time those beds are used by young children, like yours – imagine the danger - and complaints we would have if they DID have electric blankets!
The Granary is in a blissfully quiet location, in the mountains, rural. If you are an Aucklander (like myself) you are used to a lot of general background noise, it becomes part of your subconscious, your surroundings, and you do not hear or notice certain smaller sounds. Here, being so quiet, you hear the proverbial pin drop. All the time guests say how delighted they are with the quiet surrounds. Of course we cannot control how noisy other guests are, nor what the weather or temperature outside is in the middle of winter... Next to you was a lovely family from Whitianga, who stayed 10 days and was very active with skiing making the most of this location. They loved everything about their stay. Both houses have been booked out each day since early June.
May we remind you that ‘the owners who mean well’ did not even chase you for payment for your extra person for 2 nights, so kind they are. The Granary has been operating for 8 years and extremely successfully so, with exceptionally positive comments from the vast array of guests who have been staying. We never had complaints such as yours.
It is clear that your superior and patronising approach coloured your comments and it is sad that you could not find anything positive to say.
