What you can expect
Nagano Sake Tasting & Walking Tour – Experience the Heart of Japan’s Sake Culture
Nagano is home to the second-largest number of sake breweries in Japan, thanks to its pristine mountain water and high-quality rice—essential for crafting exceptional sake. Nestled in the Japanese Alps, Nagano’s natural environment creates sakes with rich flavours, depth, and smooth finishes.
Join this immersive experience, where you’ll taste some of the finest sakes in Japan, explore historic brewing traditions, and stroll through the atmospheric streets around Zenkoji Temple, one of Japan’s most revered temples.
This tour involves approximately 8,000 steps (5-6 km / 3-4 miles), including a 20-25 minute walk from Nagano Station to Zenkoji Temple. If you have mobility concerns, please contact us before booking.
Sake Tasting Experience
The highlight of this tour is a visit to a 300-year-old sake brewery, where you’ll taste and compare a variety of high-quality sake, including:
• Unfiltered, unpasteurized, and seasonal sakes with unique characteristics.
• Nagano’s famous plum wine, offering a rich, fruity aroma.
• Amazake, a non-alcoholic, naturally sweet fermented rice drink.
Our expert guide will introduce you to sake brewing, flavour profiles, and ideal pairings. You’ll also enjoy Nagano’s famous miso soup, made from locally produced Shinshu miso, known for its deep umami flavour.
Step Into Nagano’s Brewing Heritage
You’ll also visit a historic 120-year-old sake factory (no longer in use), offering a rare glimpse into traditional sake-making techniques. Explore the preserved interiors and learn about the time-honored methods of fermentation, rice polishing, and ageing that define premium sake.
Explore the Zenkoji Temple District
After the sake experience, your guide will lead you on a leisurely stroll through Nagano’s historic streets, lined with traditional craft shops, old teahouses, and beautifully preserved wooden buildings.
• Visit local artisan shops selling handmade sweets, crafts, and regional delicacies.
• Learn about Zenkoji Temple’s centuries-old history and cultural significance.
