It was a gift to the city from Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother Clarence, so the full name of the fountain is Clarence Buckingham Memorial Fountain. It was designed by the main architect of Chicago Edward H. Bennett, who was inspired by the Fountain of Laton near the Palace of Versailles in Paris.
