November through May grey whales are seen making their annual migration from their feeding grounds near the Arctic to the mating and calving lagoons near Mexico, and back again. In between May and October the largest known animal to have ever lived on earth, the giant blue whale is encountered. Anytime throughout the year fin whales, minke whales, and humpback whales delight spectators. Rare whales that could be seen at any time include orcas (killer whales), Bryde’s whales, sei whales, sperm whales, pilot whales, and false killer whales.
“Come for the whales, stay for the dolphins.” Several species of wild dolphins are seen throughout the year, including mega-pods that can number up to 10,000 dolphins! Dana Point is home to the unforgettable dolphin stampede - hundreds, sometimes thousands of dolphins porpoising out of the water together at high speed.
