What you can expect

Spend a day exploring some of Canada's National Historic Sites including the luxurious Hatley Castle, the Fisgard Lighthouse—the oldest lighthouse in Western Canada—and Fort Rodd Hill, a 19th century coastal artillery fort. Enjoy convenient transport through the scenic countryside between locales.

After being picked up from your hotel in Victoria, sit back and relax as you make your way to Hatley Castle, a 40-room manor designed in the Scottish baronial style that was built in 1908. Once you arrive, walk inside the enormous mansion to experience the arched wood-covered ceilings of the main hall, tour the many extravagant chambers, and then head outside to the superb gardens. The extensive castle grounds also boast vast farmlands and a nature trail that weaves throughout a forest of Douglas firs and western red cedars.

Depart the castle grounds and take pleasure in the charming waterfront drive to Fort Rodd Hill, stopping for photos where it meets up with the waters of Esquimalt Harbour. Still used to this day as a base of the Royal Canadian Navy, this space has been used as a defensive strong point since 1850. Learn about its historic significance with commentary from your insightful guide and check out the nearby Fisgard Lighthouse, a red-and-white beacon that sits perched on the property’s rocky edge.

Next, head to the CFB Esquimalt naval base, where you can catch glimpses of modern battleships, examine maritime artefacts at the Naval & Military Museum, and learn more about the fascinating history of Canada's armed forces. If the weather’s nice, consider a hike around Macaulay Point, a battery-turned-park that offers grand views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. After an immersive day of sightseeing, climb aboard your coach for a pleasant ride back to Victoria.
