Castelo de Tomar

Stunning, that's what I thought when I first walked along the walls, and I'm English I grew up with castles. I take you up the secret Templar paths, by the fountain of blood and skip all the hustle of tourists. The Castle of Tomar, is a stunning example of medieval architecture. Constructed in the 12th century by the Knights Templar, it served as their headquarters. Its strategic position atop a hill offers commanding views of the surrounding landscape. The castle features robust walls, towers, and a keep, showcasing both military might and religious symbolism. Over the centuries, it underwent expansions and modifications, blending various architectural styles. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and impressive fortifications.
Convent of Christ

I don't take you in, because I don't think you need to pay for someone to state the bloody obvious. Traveller, trust me, you have got this. The Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was originally a Templar stronghold in Tomar, Portugal. Founded in the 12th century, it evolved into a vast complex combining Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. The centrepiece is the Charola, a unique round church with Templar symbols. Its architecture and history symbolise Portugal's role in the Age of Discovery. Today, it stands as a remarkable testament to medieval architecture and the Templar legacy.
Roda do parque do Mouchao
  • 15m
The Roda Hidráulica do Mouchão in Tomar, Portugal, is a historic hydraulic water wheel dating back to the 17th century. Located in the picturesque Mouchão Park, it served as part of the city's irrigation system, harnessing the power of the Nabão River to supply water to the surrounding areas. The wheel, made of wood and iron, stands as a testament to Portugal's engineering ingenuity of the time. Today, it's a charming symbol of Tomar's rich history and is a popular spot for visitors to admire and photograph.
