Somebody from the hotel staff used the credit card I provided at check-in. I only used this card at this hotel and nowhere else, and the day after my check-in they helped themselves to an Amazon purchase of about 200 euros ($300 CAD). This made me feel unsafe and ruined the whole experience. When I politely complained, the front desk receptionist showed me the physical folder where my file was - a copy of my passport page with the credit card number written on it. The folder obviously had other guests' files in it, anyone from the staff has access to it, it's not locked anywhere. My guess is it's somebody from the night shift but of course there's no way to prove it. I had to call my bank to cancel the card, had to pay for this international call. When I spoke to the manager, he just said "It's not any of our staff", which of course he would say that. No apology, no "sorry for your experience", even though I explained I never used this card anywhere else. Gave me his card and said "Let me know what the bank says". The bank is not going to tell me who did this, they can just determine it was a fraudulent transaction. I did try calling his number a day later (I realized I'd left an earring on my nightstand and didn't want anybody to come in and steal it since I didn't trust the staff at that point). He hung up on my call without picking up and then turned off the phone. I ended up calling the front desk 6 times before somebody picked up and I asked not to clean my room.
