Wolsingham is a small market town looking much as it did hundreds of years ago with many stone built listed buildings, period features and links to its long history. In recent years it has become a thriving visitor stopping off point at the base of the Weardale valley.

Wolsingham Agricultural Society holds its annual show on the first weekend in September, with a daily attendance of over 30,000. Established in 1763 it is one of the oldest show in the country and brings in animals and visitors from a wide area.

Wolsingham is served by the heritage Weardale Railway, whose trains run from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope, including special steam train services, the highlight of the year being the Polar Express at Christmas time.

Weardale boasts one of the only outdoor heated swimming pools located 6 miles from the cottage.

Kevin/ Eileen will welcome you to Angate Cottage and provide a brief tour of the cottage and facilities. Should you require any assistance throughout your stay, Eileen and Kevin live locally are only too pleased to assist.

The oldest houses in Wolsingham are at Whitfield Place on Front Street, there are three cottages, the left-most dated 1677 and with the initials 'DM'.

The other properties here have an even longer history. They are said to have been converted from the former Pack Horse Inn where Edward III may have rested on returning from his unfruitful encounter with the Scots in Weardale in April 1327. Another king, Charles II, is said to have ridden his horse up the internal staircase of the house in the 17th century and it still has an impressive staircase today.

Excellent location
Met by Kevin who was most helpful. Pleasant cottage that is much bigger than it looks from the outside. Good walks from the front door.

Lovely Cottage in good location
Angate cottage is nicely decorated, well maintained, clean, and very cosy. Everything needed for a holiday was provided. Despite being located on a busy road the traffic noise was no issue, and especially at night it was very quiet. Short walk to the town center with some good pubs, restaurants and shops. Many good hikes can be started directly from the cottage. Communication with Eileen and Kevin was very fast and friendly, and Kevin showed us around when we arrived. We would love to stay here again, and also recommend to friends.
