Days of sunshine, snorkeling, and adventures on the slopes of live volcanoes await you on the Big Island of Hawaii. It's the only place in the world where you can dive at night with majestic manta rays, sample the finest Kona coffee right where it grows, and visit a royal palace, all in one day. Flights to Kailua land at Kona International Airport (KOA), minutes away from the main town on the leeward side of this remarkable island.
Transportation From KOA
Landing at KOA after Kailua flights, you step right off the plane and into the tropical breezes of this open-air, Old Hawaii-style airport. A number of major car rental companies are a quick shuttle ride away, and having your own car is very useful for exploring the island. Kailua hotels and the historic Kailua Village are just seven miles away; within 30 minutes you can be at the Keauhou resort area; and approximately 45 minutes away is Hapuna Beach State Park, where you'll find some of the island's best beaches. The three-hour journey to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can see one of the world's most active volcanoes, walk through an ancient lava tube, and take a scenic drive along the Chain of Craters Road—is worth the cost of car rental alone. Other options include taxis, which you can find curbside at the airport, and shuttle services arranged in advance. Public transport on the Hele-On bus is available (and free of charge) but limited to one morning and one afternoon departure daily, Monday through Saturday. There's no official sign for the bus stop; pick it up in front of the Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center.
