Here's the deal with the Carambola in the opinion from someone who has been coming there for over a decade. It was once a stunning eco resort covered with tropical plants and beautiful 'bungalows' nestled into a secluded tropical cove. Then came the hurricanes and FEMA and lack of infrastructure support and hence all the very poor reviews over the past few years. Apparently the resort has new owners who have begun to make investments in upkeep and the place appears to be on its way back. A few things you should know: 1. Yes, it is a Marriott but this is a Carribean Island with and 'island time' service. If you come expecting classic Marriott level service, you will be disappointed. The staff however and kind and friendly islanders who will treat you the way you treat them. 2. The setting is truly spectacular, the rooms are spacious with charming bungalow ambiance but occurrences such as a leaky toilet may be present. 3. It's a perfect romantic secluded and safe setting so you will need a car if you want to see all the island has to offer. 4. The breakfast is limited to a $30 pp buffet so bring your own breakfast food or drive to Cane Bay 10 minutes away. 5. If you are a scuba diver, this is a true hidden gem! Great dive shop on site, strap on a tank and dive the famous 'wall' right off the beach on your own time. Bottom-line: If you are expecting a classic Marriott, you will be leaving a bad review in the end. Come for the beautiful setting, beach, hiking, etc.

Super disappointed in this property. The location and the beach is stunning but the property is in major disrepair. The wait staff at the bar is taking island time to a whole new level. We sat at the bar for over 20 minutes with no service. When she finally got off her phone to serve us the choices we asked for were not available. They have several indicators that it’s a resort with spa services but once we arrived they informed us that no spa was on the property. They advertise two dining options but neglected to tell us the second dining option was only open a couple days a week. The potential for this property is great but I would not recommend to anyone in it’s current condition.

The resort is secluded, with very limited transportation means. Staff is less than helpful, made us feel trapped! Food options in the property are really bad.

The stay was beautiful with a little hiccups. The extra $300 incidentals along with the air conditioning going out was an inconvenience. But the transition from a different room was simple. And please rent a car because the taxi fees add up fast.

Beautiful property. Beautiful views. Spacious room. The property is far out with nothing close by so renting a car is a must if you don’t want to spend a fortune on taxi’s. We tried the hotel bar and grill the first night and the food was not good. Talking to other guests we got the same bad feedback on the food from the restaurant. I suggest looking up better food options. The Beach is beautiful but in January it was a little choppy so could not really swim much. All in all I would stay there again just not eat there.

The Front Desk staff sat outside while I waited to be checked in (I thought they were guests) after 10 minutes she came in and checked me in. The next day there was a roach in the room, housekeeping came in and changed the towels and left the roach on the floor. Our final day I went into by bag and noticed something on my infants tub that I keep the cereal in but took it for nothing (not knowing it was rat droppings) and threw it in the sink. I then made the bottle not realizing that the rat had bitten holes in the cover of the formula. Looking further it bit through my pads and left more droppings in my bag. I went to the front desk to ask for something to sanitize my items and housekeeping did not want to comply to the point he had to come to the desk to speak with me. He apologized and sent Clorox wipes to the room. I've worked in hospitality for years and there was no remorse or urgency to assist, I had to throw away the formula and luckily my infant was still sleeping and I had family on island who rushed to replace the formula. They never asked any if they could assist, nothing...this is completely unacceptable.

THIS HOTEL DOES NOT HOLD THE STANDARDS OF MARRIOTT HOTELS. Marriott has agreed to let the hotel use their name but don’t be fooled as we were. The hotel is located at the foot of a mountain. Surrounded by mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. It is an absolutely stunning location, but not convenient to anything else on the island. The staff is friendly but they lack training, the alcohol supplies ran out over the week we were there, no Gin, no vodka, beer selection was low, limited cordials . If you would like to appreciate the location you should rent a vehicle, and bring your own alcohol. Taking taxi's was very costly and limited after 7:00pm due to location. The dining options were very limited due to equipment failure and lack of funding to make the necessary repairs.

Beautiful location, it is far probably 30 minutes from anything major so make sure you have a rental car. Food and coffee is horrible, so I recommend eating elsewhere. I would stay there again. Staff seemed friendly. Tip- make sure before you say anything to the locals you start with "good morning, good afternoon, goodnight" its a sign of respect there and it truly makes a difference.

Don't Believe the Photos Online

As soon as we arrived I felt like we had been duped. The resort looks nothing like the photos on line and the staff acted like the guests were an inconvenience from the moment we set foot on property. There were plenty of staff sitting around on golf carts doing nothing and no one offered to help us with our bags. Many times we were waiting to be helped while staff were on their cell phones behind the desk or the bar. The restaurants were running out of menu items and pricing was not consistent with what we got charged. The furniture on our balcony was rusty and there were nails sticking out on the benches. Some of the sidewalks were impassable due to debris and dirt that looked like it had been there awhile. Not long after checkin I was chatting with a Hotels.com virtual agent to cancel the 3 nights at the end of our stay. The agent contacted the hotel for me and said yes I would get a refund. When I went to check out on Jan1 they had no idea I was checking out and as of right now I have not received a refund from you. I would like to be contacted to resolve this matter please.

One of the prettiest resorts on the island! The suites are well laid-out and the nearby hiking path to the tide pools is great! Staff was very helpful. On the downside, the location is isolated and Carambola's dining choices are overpriced and not very good. Their food is average at best. There should be a poolside bar/restaurant for small bites and drinks, at affordable rates. If the food was better, and more favorably priced, I think more people would stay in the resort for dining rather than leaving to go to other restaurants.

Grossly understaffed

Let’s start with the property is beautiful and the highlight of our stay. But that’s where it ends. The “resort” is grossly understaffed. Everyone around us would say the same thing, if only there was “one more”, i.e. one more server, one more food runner, one more bartender, one more housekeeping staff, one more front desk person. The potential of the hotel is undeniable but it’s not properly staffed. Housekeeping came to our room once in the 5 nights we stayed there. We would have to consistently obtain our own bath towels and take out our own garbage (which remained by the stairs for days on on end). The cherry on top was on the day of check out, which is at noon, housekeeping showed up banging on our door at 8:00 am to remind us that check out was at noon and came back 2 hours later. Magically housekeeping appeared more times that morning than in the entire time we were there.
