Flights To La Paz
Take a deep breath and step off one of the flights to La Paz, Bolivia, the highest administrative capital in the world. Although Sucre is Bolivia's technical capital, La Paz is considered the de facto capital, as it is the country's largest city and home to many government departments. The highest point in the city tops an incredible 13,300 feet and just happens to be the site of El Alto International Airport (LPB), the highest international airport in the world, so give yourself time to adjust to the thin air on your way to baggage claim.
Transportation from LPB
There are a few accommodation options just outside LPB, but it's just as easy to make the quick trip to any hotel in La Paz, which is a short six-mile drive to the northeast of LPB. Travelers landing on La Paz flights have a few options when it comes to transportation. Many hotels send taxis, or you can catch your own just outside arrivals. There are also shared vans and minibuses, which are significantly cheaper. These can get a little cozy, so they may not be the best choice for those toting lots of luggage. Alternatively, catch bus 212 just outside the airport; this will take you to the main bus terminal in La Paz. Once you've settled in at your hotel, take to the streets to see what La Paz has to offer. Admire the architecture of Iglesia de San Francisco or visit Tiwanaku, an archaeological site, to explore the region's cultural heritage. La Paz itself is stunning: built into the canyon of the Choqueyapu River, its narrow cobblestone streets and dramatic inclines are presided over by the majestic snowcapped peak of Mt. Illimani. It's an adventure just walking around the city to take in the sights and explore the numerous open-air markets.
