Historic villa with pool set in beautiful south-facing grounds

A beautiful historic villa that faces south towards the Dordogne River, called "Domaine de la Croix de St Michel". Built of Bordeaux stone in the 18th century, the Domaine has been lovingly restored recently. The main house has six bedrooms, four bathrooms, two living rooms and two kitchens. The seventh bedroom is in the pretty eighteenth century pigeonnier, and this has its own shower-room and toilet. There is a sunny pool, almost two acres of lawns leading down to the neighbour's vineyard, and "the Grange", an old stone barn in which the Domaine's wine used to be made, and which now offers table tennis, table football and a video projector and DVD player for watching movies.

The Domaine is on the outskirts of Bourg, a pretty riverside village set amongst vineyards with restaurants, shops and an excellent supermarket. The mediaeval city of Bordeaux is 15 miles to the south. St Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with ancient streets and Romanesque churches, is 45 minutes away. Bordeaux airport can be reached in 35 minutes.

Fourteen solar panels and an electric car charger seek to reduce the climate impact of this beautiful old house.

Little peace of paradise
What can I say apart from fantastic from start to finish. The communication before we arrived, giving us ideas of things to do was a great help to plan ahead and make sure we covered everything we wanted to do. James meeting us and running through the workings of the house for the stay, and communication was first class all along. The house is truly lovely, and allowed us to have a lovely peaceful break. The house having two parts was great, and worked putting the kids one side. The pool was brilliant and was well used each day for many hours by the 9 of us staying across the week, ranging from 9 to 78. The house is well positioned for day trips, St Emillion was idyllic, Dune de Pilat was spectacular, the many Chateau’s and vineyards for wine tasting, say no more. A day trip to Bordeaux - best to do the park and ride and get the tram into the centre as makes it a lot easier. We went to the wine museum which was great for all ages and wine tasting on the 8th floor with great views of the city, the museum also had a Picasso exhibition, which was great and enjoyed by all. A truly lovely house that made the break even more special.

Wonderful stay at Bourg
We had a family gathering at this historic villa on the outskirts of the town of Bourg. We had 13 members ranging in age from 10 to 75. We had an absolutely wonderful time in spite of the heat. The pool was perfect for hot afternoons. The property manager secured additional fans for us to use which made the heat (above 100 on several days) bearable. In the newer section of the villa there is always a lovely breeze from the west. The older portion of the villa with 3 bedrooms was quite warm, but we managed. The kitchen was well equipped and we prepared several wonderful meals cooking inside and using the new grill outside - feeding 13 is a big task! There was plenty of space inside and outside to spread out or join in with the group. It was an easy walk to the local Boulangerie and we went every morning for croissants, pain chocolate and baggettes. I miss that wonderful bread! There is a farmers market in the town square on Sunday mornings which has a great selection of foods. Several wineries are close by. It was a perfect location. We took side trips to St. Emilion, Bordeaux, and Blaye and the nearby caves of Pair - non-Pair. Our favorite excursion was to the Chateau Monconseil - Gazin for a day of escape room fun, wine olympiad fun, a tour of the winery and a delicious lunch. The family were wonderful and we had so much fun with the escape room and olympiad. I cannot say enough about how helpful the property manager, James McGivern was. He responded quickly to any questions and was just terrific about anything we needed. We would definitely recommend this historic villa!

What a wonderful home! Our family and friends had the most amazing week in Bourg/Bordeaux! The home was so warm, comfortable and inviting and it made the week truly memorable. James - the property manager - was attentive and helpful and made our stay seamless. James and Eileen - the owners - were so kind and gave us great tips in advance of our trip. We will return!

A Perfect Vacation
My family and friends enjoyed two perfect weeks at this gorgeous chateau. The location was idea for daily walks to the bakery and town. Don't miss the market on Sunday mornings -- the roasted chicken, other meats, fish and veggies are fresh and delicious. The house, pool and gardens provided many comfortable places in which to gather and relax. Communications with the owner was the best experience we've ever had, and we've been renting homes for 20+ years! In addition, the property managers were available to us at any time and were extremely helpful. Thank you for opening up your beautiful home to us ... we are already planning to rent it again!

We so enjoyed the property, grounds, and pool. The chateau is situated near the small town of Bourg, with several restaurants, views, and shops. Traveling to Bordeaux and wine country was easy, and the home was so beautiful we enjoyed staying in as well. James was a friendly and hospitable host, we hope to be back!

Great Place for a Large Group to Visit the Bordeaux Region
Between the two kitchens, two living areas, the pool, and the separate building for movies and ping pong, the villa accommodates a large group very well. And the location is within a short walk to Bourg and reasonable drives to the Medoc, the St. Emilion region and the city. The only downsides were the limited number of bathrooms in such an old villa, especially for those in old part and the pigeonnier, and limited amenities such as facial tissues, soap, etc. Just be prepared to make a quick trip to the nearby Carrefour when you arrive. One final note: If you're looking for a personal connection with the owners, this isn't the place, as they weren't on the property, and the property manager was also remote. But if you are happy being independent, the lack of intrusion was great. On the days we came and went, Karen supervised the delivery and retrieval of rented bicycles, which we appreciated!

An exquisite family retreat
Our family of 12 enjoyed this beautiful villa, the village of Bourg, and the lovely vineyards and chateaus in the area for a fantastic week of wine-tasting and family time. The grounds and house are just as beautiful as described. One of the highlights was our pool time, especially the evening swim and gazing at the stars (including a shooting star!). The kitchens are well-stocked and very comfortable; however, a new coffee maker would be a plus! We loved our morning walks to the boulangerie for delicious croissants and baguettes. The owners and caretakers were very attentive and communicative. We hope to be able to return some day soon!

Excellent villa in Bourg
The villa is a beautiful facility and a great location for a large family reunion! It has extensive grounds, lovely landscaping and a pool. The historic town of Bourg, (with a good boulangerie), is a short walk away and many vineyards are within a few kilometers. The owner, James, was very responsive to concerns and questions before and during our stay, and extremely thorough in his discussions of the property, providing excellent suggestions for local activities, restaurants, and wine tasting. The house is actually divided, with two kitchens and sitting rooms. All the bedrooms are on the second floor (called "first floor" in European usage), up steep winding staircases, which would be difficult for people with infirmities. The ground floor has one half bathroom, while all the others are on the second floor. Our family loved our stay in James' villa!

Impressive Chateau!
Wow! Book it. You won't regret it! Everything is just perfect -- the pictures don't really do it justice! The house is fully stocked and the grounds are the best place to relax with a glass of wine. The town is walking distance and has everything you need. I highly recommend the farmer's market on Sunday! James & Karen are extremely helpful and give great advice on local things to do / see! I can't wait to stay here again!

Perect Chateau, Perfect Ville
Visited Bourg to see where my American wife's grandmother was born and raised. Very friendly and picturesque town on the Gironde River in the Bordeaux wine country. Chateau was excellent - spacious, well maintained, and only a short walk from the downtown, market and docks. Met and spent time with the town's mayor. Would have rated it as five stars, but the local caretaker for the chateau was "unavailable" our entire visit so we were never told by her how to turn on the outdoor pool lights for dining - she even failed to respond to the owner ..... Would highly recommend both this historic town and this chateau to anyone seeking a relaxed vacation with the opportunity for actual interaction on a personal level with local French residents. And, of course, to wine and history lovers. Would return. My wife and daughter are already talking about a return visit.....

Fabulous Property
We chose this beautiful property after searching many within an hour of Bordeaux because of the number of bedrooms & bathrooms & the lovely large communal kitchen. The property is very easy to find & communications with the owner & the property Manager were absolutely fantastic. They gave concise & detailed instructions about the property & lots of information for places to visit & eat in Bourg & the surrounding areas. The facilities at the property were perfect for our needs. The weather wasn't great when we stayed so didn't actually use the pool. We did use the BBQ a couple of times & ate alfresco for most of our meals. The kitchen is well equipped, like a home from home. We slept in the sumptuous master bedroom with an enormous en-suite, including a large walk-in shower & separate bath. The steps down were tricky for my aging knees when I had to make a night time trip to the loo, but the luminescent strips on each step aided my journey. Not too sure about no door on the en-suite though?! Bourg itself is very quiet but has a wonderful Boulangerie & Carrefour within walking distance or a very short drive away. Our party took a walk into town to explore & found it to be quite sleepy with most shops closed, as unfortunately we went at lunch time (ish). It was still a pleasant walk through the town and down by the river. We had a lovely meal at Le Bouchon de Bourg on our last evening. The staff were very accommodating of our limited French. We recommend this property :-)
