Better than a beach house
We couldn't be more pleased with our stay at Villa Virginia. This was our first time to Tulum and we did a lot of research about where to stay. We started by looking at Papaya Playa Resort, then started looking at houses. Both beach and in town.
Based on our research we read that Tulum has issues with sargum (seaweed) and that it is very hit and miss which beaches are good at any given time. We figured a resort would have the resources to clear the beaches but a VRBO likely would not. This led us away from beachfront property (our typical preference). This ended up being a great call. Most of the houses we saw along the beaches had 4-6" of stinky seaweed in front of them.
What we didn't know when we booked the house is that it is owned by a fantastic resort called Jashita. This was great because they had hotel staff there to greet us when we arrived and we received DAILY cleaning. Amazing! The house is brand new and gorgeous. The rooftop pool was our favorite hangout each evening as we watched the sunset. Beds were comfortable and the bathrooms are amazing, including two full master baths with outdoor tubs on the balconies (plus two other "normal" baths. We didn't use them but its a cool touch. The house has two masters and two smaller rooms. All are comfortable and good size, with balconies.
The other reason Jashita ownership is great is that we were able to use their private beach, which is sheilded by a reef that keeps the seaweed at bay and provides great snorkeling. Plus the hotel has a great pool and a fantastic beachfront restaurant. Win! Plushness of a house with the service of a resort.
Staying in town allowed us to get a nicer, more comfortable house and have the flexibility to go find the best beaches without being tied down to one beach like at a resort. We spent two days hitting different cenotes. The water was crystal clear and cool, which was refreshing in July. Our college age girls loved jumping from the cliffs into the water.
Lastly, the house is in a very safe gated neighborhood. There is construction around but that's the price to pay with a new house. It didn't bother us at all. We were gone most of the day and they were gone by the time we got back in the late afternoon/evening. It's located near the main drag and there is a supermarket nearby to stock the kitchen & bar.
Be sure to check out Safari restaurant right down the street. Amazing tacos!
