I booked here as it had good reviews, and admittedly, was one of the few ok looking places I could find in central Whitby. The photos were deceiving however. While the staff and location were/is fantastic, the building itself and the rooms are in a much much needed state of a revamp, additionally the room we were in was quite dirty with dust on the towel rails, spiders on the roof, the bold in the bathroom was filthy, water f skate on the ceiling and cracking paint, the carpet.kooks like it hasn’t been steam cleaned in a number of years causing us to wear socks around the room. One half of the shower door was broken/immovable which meant we had to squeeze through the little gap made where the first half of the door opens. I was just able to stay here for the night, but would definitely not want to stay longer, or again, until the place has had an upgrade.

Disappointing accommodation
The bed was only accessible on one side instead of 2 because it was up against the wall. The hand wash ran out in the bathroom. We left the empty out but was never replaced. Only 6 hangers for a couple. We paid £465 for 3 nights bed and breakfast and was disappointed with the accommodation for the price. There were renovations taking place but a decorator sanding a door down at check in and out time is unacceptable. My sister in law paid the same price but got a bigger room but same situation with the bed. Car parking was a good setup.

We love staying here especially in the superior rooms and with views of the Abbey and whitby all the staff are so helpful and really lovely but you need to book with the Royal not throught Expedia as we paid £80 odd more !

We stayed in room 141 which was a great size room and a large window overlooking the sea. The temperature in the room was extremely warm and there is no way to adjust the temperature. In addition, the following morning whilst having a shower, the bath started to fill with stagnant water which smelt disgusting. This smell was extremely bad and although we went for breakfast (having paid £27), which was a bit much for a slice of toast and some fruit as we hardly eat anything due to not feeling well due to the room smell. We mentioned this to reception on checking out to be told they will get maintenance to take a look! Very poor customer service indeed.

The hotel continues to improve. Breakfast was good and the staff were helpful. We didn’t like the failure to service the room after the first of our two nights. Things like milk sachets and toilet rolls were in need of replenishment. Parking on site is limited. The location is excellent. Each time we return we feel that the hotel is improving.

It was a bit shabby but very comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. I chose this hotel because it had car parking but this is not guaranteed. I imagine feeding meters on the street on a daily basis in summer would be a problem.

The stay was good as we were there for a music show weekend We were out roughly from 10am till midnight The family room was clean and plenty of space Just the one disappointing thing was the duvet inside the cover was beyond acceptable as it was mattered and really should not have been used 😞 we only noticed this on our last day The hotel staff were very apologetic and made a note of it

Check in was fine lovely lady. Went to the room and Oh dear me. TV the smallest I ever seen in a hotel, sat on the dressing table far from bed . Furniture damaged and dated Marks on the wall. Curtains don’t reach the floor. Curtain lining all ripped. Thin carpet with marks. Can’t reach a socket near the bed as they have squeezed a bedside cabinets in. Bathroom bright green Lino and very dated but worked fine. The food was good and staff very nice with the exception of one lady on reception. After 2 terrible nightsfeeling the bed base we asked for a change of mattress . We mentioned that the rooms were not as advertised. She said it was the booking agents fault as the restored rooms only opened three weeks ago and there was three of them. I booked in March and the upgrade pictures were up then Plus the same pictures were on their own web site so clearly been misleading. She stated she would get maintenance to change the mattress despite no one has ever complained about the room. We returned at 1530 and nothing had been done. She said to my wife. What do you want now? We asked when it would be changed. She answered when he gets round to it.,rude! When we went out for dinner we asked the new staff and they told us maintenance man isn’t in today . The duty manager said he would sort it and to his due he did very quickly. Disappointing weekend, thanks Do not be misled by it being called the Royal. There isn’t much royal about it. Stay away. £167 per night .. Never again.
