There were two false fire alarms which deprived me of my sleep. Both times I had to take the stairs from the 4th floor to the ground floor. At my check out I asked for compensation and was told that the manager will contact me by phone or email.

Paper thin walls
The walls are paper thin. You can hear the next room like you were in it. My neighbor came home at 3am with company and it sucked !! There were at least 20 homeless people living around the hotel so the streets smelled like piss, but they were very nice homeless people so I didn't feel unsafe.

The building itself is very old and in desperate need of renovations. The walls are paper thin- I could hear everything the people in the room next to me were saying, and they weren't that loud. Metal surfaces are rusty, there are cracks in the walls, and the bedding had numerous stains. The lights flicker and the TV had buffering issues. On my second night there, the fire alarm was triggered at 4am and everyone in the building was forced out due to a false alarm. I know that is no one's fault, but Ive never seen that at any hotel before. If a bunch of us weren't sitting in the mezzanine, waiting for the fire department, I wouldn't have known there were vending machines. The only reason Im not giving it one star is because the staff was very helpful and friendly (although there was usually only one person running everything.) You get what you pay for, I guess.

Avoid this place
I chose this hotel solely due to its proximity to Moscone center. I understand its an old building but effort is needed, the hallways and room really show their age. The parking is a joke, there are limited spaces and is grossly over priced. Finally, the smoke alarm went off at 4:30am and we had to evacuate down 7 flights of darkly lit stairs with no response from hotel management. Fortunately, it was a flase alarm. At least the bed was comfortable and the bar was cozy.

The Pickwick Hotel was central to a conference I was attending and was exactly what I needed during my trip. The people at the front desk and the housekeeper, Marie, were always so friendly as I came/went and they were even kind enough to let me do a late checkout (2pm) my last day there - which I cannot tell you how much I appreciated, as I was also grieving the recent loss of my twin sister and just needed that extra time before facing the day. Thank you Pickwick Staff!!! I'll definitely stay there again next year for my conference.

Staff friendly, bed was comfy and felt warm. Location was close to union square and great shopping places. A lot of homeless around but that’s nothing to do with the hotel and the hotel take measures to keep guest safe.

The hotel was pleasant. Our rooms were joined. If you’re a family that needs joined rooms this is not the place to be. The joined rooms only have 1 king bed, it will only work if you have babies or small toddlers. The 1 room we had was a little worn down. The rug needs replacing & all the doors need to be replaced or at least oiled. They all squeak! Also our a/c did not work. You can open the windows it for security reasons it just cracks open for a little breeze. The office Manager Brian was very helpful & pleasant! He helped in securing us joined rooms & explaining what the had available. I was had the opportunity to meet him & he was just as pleasant in person! They do have rooms with 2 double beds but they are not joined. They also had the cheapest parking in the area! Everywhere else charged at least $85/night!.

Staff was extremely pleasant but my room was incredibly outdated and faced the very loud and somewhat dangerous 5th street. I checked out of hotel two days early. I would not recommend this hotel, especially if your room faces the 5th street side. I would like to get my two nights expenses back.
