Very courteous and accomodating staff. Unfortunately a neighboring hotel/strikers were protesting from 7am -10pm. Handlery staff was valiantly trying to move residents to quieter side of building... Hotel common areas are showing signs of wear but the room was clean and comfortable. Daily room cleaning service was excellent This family owned hotel has a nice heated outdoor pool and gym. I would upgrade to rooms around the pool next time - and I would return again

We stayed at the Handlery Union Square Hotel during a contract dispute in the hotel directly opposite was occurring - queue a strike right outside the hotel, so first impressions were slightly dulled by this. The lobby is directly accessible when you go through the door. There was two members of staff booking in new guests. We were informed that our room was small but at the rear of the hotel which was quietest OR we could have a upgrade with two beds, etc but this would be at the front of the hotel with the (loud) strike opposite. We were saddened that we had to say no to the upgrade but the noise from the strike ran from "early" we were informed to around 10:00pm each day and had done for two weeks. The room we had was the smallest room I have ever had anywhere I have travelled, including NYC and London where space is at a premium. The room had no view unfortunately and looked out to a boxed in courtyard, the safe didn't work, the air con didn't go below 68'f (20'c for us Brits) and then there was small issues like a blown bulb in the lamp, some small marks to paint work, TV's contrast was all wrong (and couldn't be fixed via the remote). What was good was the location, the staff and the cleanliness.

Old building in Downtown. Clean rooms and linens. No food service and poor air conditioning perhaps that's normal in San Fransisco. Parking overpriced $75 for one night
