This hotel is beautiful and perfectly located in the harbor with excellent amenities, not to mention very dog friendly. If your visiting Monterey Bay, this is the place to stay (a bit pricy, but so is everything in Monterey)

It was a very nice hotel community located in downtown. My only issue was the walls were not very insulated. I could hear my neighbors next-door that it is a very nice. It has nice restaurants inside.

Great location but dont eat at their restaurant
Very nice location and very clean. The hotel staff themselves were pleasant, i felt the staff at jacks was not the best , they didnt seem thrilled to be there. We did both the bar and the restaurant and the bar was quick but not very friendly and seemed annoyed that we walked up. Both for breakfast and dinner we had to go get someone from the corner by the bar where the entire staff was standing and talking to ask to be seated after waiting for a bit. The pillows in the room were extremely uncomfortable in both rooms and none of us ended up using a pillow so we did not get much sleep. I would recommend due to the location, however bring your own pillows and eat at outside offerings rather than hotel restaurant

This is one of the better hotels in the area. You get a lot of bang for your buck. On the other side, my room had a lot of needed repairs, from the screen door to the air conditioner to a light bulb needing to be replaced.

Not so great stay; good food though.
First room had mold. We had to switch to a different room. Second room had pubes on the bathroom floor, and the bathroom door had water damage that was never properly repaired. The beds were super uncomfortable- you’d think they’d be top of the line for what you’re paying. Overall, the restaurant was the best thing.

I stayed for 5 nights, and the fire alarm went off at around 3am on 2 of those nights. I asked the reason when I checked out, they just looked away and said that someone had smoked. I can't believe it.

Everyone from the Bellmen, front desk, Valet parking were all amazing and helpful. The housekeeper found that we had left our camera behind. Security called us and Orville Dooland was so helpful in helping us get it back. He told us how to get a label from UPS for its return and it was sent out today. Wonderful staff all the way around. Over-priced rooms, properly priced lobby.
The lobby is amazing, but the rooms leave a lot to be desired for their cost. Carpet ripped, A/C went out, the lights to the patio didn’t work, and on our last night the alarm went off and had to call in to have the light turned off (the sound alarm had gone off but not the light, making it impossible to go to sleep). While someone set off the alarm, the reaction time to getting the alarm turned off was wholly unacceptable and made for a very long morning getting my toddler and dog to relax enough to go back to sleep. Staff, however, is truly top notch. From entrance to exit, every last employee was welcoming, fun, and helpful. The hotel itself needs some TLC.

Great ... but!
Our stay was delightful. Everything was great in our room, except a small issue. The shower did not have full closure. It had a partial glass panel. This means the water splashes outside onto the floor. A lot of water! It was uncomfortably wet after a shower. The bottom of the bathroom door was rusty, indicating that the water splashing problem has been around a fairly long time. Please fix this for future travelers. Other than that, we enjoyed our stay.

Totally enjoyed our stay at the Portola. Our King room was comfortable including the two chairs that accommodated my 6.6 tall husband. The bed was comfortable, there was lots of hot water and the property was quiet. Enjoyed breakfast and lunch on property. The food was delicious and priced as expected for this type of property. Staff were courteous and timely.
